2. Graham Crackers2. Do you feel less lust after eating a graham cracker? You should do – or, at least, the inventor of it hopes you do. In the 1830s, reverend Sylvester Graham decided that America had become too lust-filled. In order to curb the problem and help people across the nation get back onto a good God-fearing path, he created the ‘Graham diet.’ The diet consisted of wheat, fruit and vegetables, but absolutely no meat; eating meat and fatty foods was, Graham claimed, a way to invoke sexual thoughts in the mind. Sylvester Graham invented the graham cracker as a part of his newfound diet.19世纪30年代,教士Sylvester Graham认为美国欲望太过膨胀。 He wasn’t alone in his mind-set; someone else who shared this was John Harvey Kellogg. Does the name seem familiar? That’s right – Kellogg’s corn flakes. The beloved breakfast cereal was Kellogg’s way to save the souls of the American people, but ended up being a delicious breakfast rather than a cure for the wandering eye. Next time you need to calm down, try stuffing graham crackers into your mouth. If the wheat doesn’t do the trick, the dry mouth certainly will. /201506/383172

It may surprise fans of Johanna Basford’s intricately hand-drawn coloring books that the artist is, by her own admission, “pretty bad” at coloring. “I can’t stay in the lines,” she said sheepishly. Not that it matters. Ms. Basford’s coloring book “Secret Garden,” a 96-page collection of elaborate black-and-white ink drawings of flowers, leaves, trees and birds, has become a global best-seller. Since its release in spring 2013, “Secret Garden” has sold more than 1.4 million copies in 22 languages. It shot to the top of Amazon’s best-seller list this month, overtaking books by authors like Harper Lee, Anthony Doerr and Paula Hawkins. Her follow-up, “Enchanted Forest,” which came out in February, is briskly selling through its first print run of nearly 226,000 copies. What makes Ms. Basford’s breakout success all the more surprising is her target audience: adults who like coloring books. There are, it seems, a lot of them. Though it is tempting to describe the market for her books as niche, Ms. Basford, a 31-year-old illustrator in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has quickly outgrown that label. Like Play-Doh, jungle gyms and nursery rhymes, coloring books have always seemed best suited for the preschool set. So Ms. Basford and her publisher were surprised to learn that there was a robust — and lucrative — market for coloring books aimed at grown-ups. When they first tested the waters with “Secret Garden” a year ago, they released a cautiously optimistic first printing of 16,000 books. “I thought my mom was going to have to buy a lot of copies,” Ms. Basford said. “When the sales started to take off, it was a real shock.”“我本来以为要让我妈去买一大堆回来了,”巴斯福德说。 Surging demand caught Ms. Basford and her publisher off guard. Fan mail poured in from busy professionals and parents who confided to Ms. Basford that they found coloring in her books relaxing. More accolades flowed on social media, as people posted images from their coloring books. Hard-core fans often buy several copies of her books at a time, to experiment with different color combinations. Others have turned it into a social activity. Rebekah Jean Duthie, who lives in Queensland, Australia, and works for the Australian Red Cross, says she regularly gathers with friends for “coloring circles” at cafes and in one another’s homes. “Each page can transport you back to a gentler time of life,” she said of Ms. Basford’s books in an email.“每一页都能让你回到一段更祥和的时光,”她在一封电子邮件中这么描述巴斯福德的书。Ms. Basford has become something of a literary celebrity in South Korea, where “Secret Garden” has sold more than 430,000 copies, she says. The craze was kicked off in part, it seems, by a Korean pop star, Kim Ki-bum, who posted a delicately colored-in floral pattern from Ms. Basford’s book on Instagram, where he has 1.8 million followers. Part of the apparent appeal is the tactile, interactive nature of the books, which offer respite to the screen-weary. “People are really excited to do something analog and creative, at a time when we’re all so overwhelmed by screens and the Internet,” she said. “And coloring is not as scary as a blank sheet of paper or canvas. It’s a great way to de-stress.” Ms. Basford started out in fashion, working on silk-screen designs. Then she opened a studio on her parents’ trout and salmon farm in Scotland, and began designing hand-drawn wallpaper for luxury hotels and boutiques. When the financial crisis hit, her business evaporated. She closed the studio and found work as a commercial illustrator for companies like Starbucks, Nike and Sony. Her publishing break came in 2011, when an editor at Laurence King Publishing discovered her work online. The editor thought her graceful illustrations could work well as a children’s coloring book. “I came back and said I would like to do a coloring book for grown-ups, and it got a bit quiet for a moment,” Ms. Basford said. “Coloring books for adults weren’t as much of a thing then.”“我回答说,我想要为成年人画一本涂色本,当时有些冷场,”巴斯福德说。 To convince them that it was a viable market, she drew five sample pages of detailed, mosaic-like illustrations. The publishers were sold. “When Johanna first approached us with the idea, we knew that people would love her illustrations as much as we did, but could never have predicted just how big the adult coloring trend would be,” said Jo Lightfoot, editorial director of Laurence King Publishing. Ms. Basford spent the next nine months working on the book at night and freelancing as an illustrator during the day. Occasionally she had doubts. “I was worried that coloring for adults was silly and it was just me that wanted to do it,” she said. It turns out she was far from alone. Other entries to this small but growing category include Patricia J. Wynne’s lavish, nature-themed Creative Haven coloring books — discreetly described as being “designed for experienced colorists” — and the more explicitly titled “Coloring Books for Grownups,” released by Chiquita Publishing. A subspecies of these books promote the meditative aspects of coloring and doodling, including “Color Me Calm” (subtitle: “A Zen Coloring Book”) and books that promise “Easy Meditation Through Coloring.” Major publishers are seizing on the trend. This year, Little, Brown will release four illustrated coloring books for adults, all subtitled “Color Your Way to Calm.” The books, “Splendid Cities” by the British artists Rosie Goodwin and Alice Chadwick and three titles by the French illustrator Zoé de Las Cases, feature detailed cityscapes with famous landmarks, cafes and street life. Promotional materials for the books emphasize the health benefits of “mindful coloring,” noting that the activity “has been shown to be a stress reliever for adults.” (Color Your Way to Calm)。 Ms. Basford is now working on her third book, after soliciting suggestions for themes from fans. A vocal faction has requested an ocean-themed coloring book. “I’ve been drawing starfish and seahorses this afternoon,” she said. In the meantime, “Secret Garden” has sold out in many markets, to the consternation of fans. Laurence King is reprinting 75,000 copies for the ed States. This month, Ms. Basford tried to calm her followers with a post on her Facebook page, promising that newly printed books would be shipping in a few weeks: “Don’t panic! New stock of Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest is on its way!” “WEEKS?” one frantic follower replied. “I can’t possibly wait WEEKS!” /201507/384604

Beijing (AFP) - A former Chinese journalist has admitted falling for an April Fool joke which sparked a decades-long myth in his country -- that US officer cadets learnt from the example of Communist military hero Lei Feng. Li Zhurun, a former reporter for China#39;s official Xinhua news agency who is now a university professor, made the confession on his Sina Weibo microblog. Ever since Communist China#39;s supreme leader Mao Zedong recognised Lei Feng for his humble heroism, said to include washinghis comrades#39; uniforms and giving his pay to the needy, authorities have encouraged citizens to do good and follow his example. While China#39;s increasingly media-savvy population has come to question the authenticity of the Lei Feng story, the folk hero remains popular in some quarters. Pictures of him wearing his trademark earflap army hat have become a pop icon emblazoned on everything frombags to cups. In his posting, Li said he had been duped by an unspecified Western news outlet, which reported on April Fool#39;s Day 1981 that the West Point military academy in New York Statehad held up the People#39;s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier as an example for all students. ;I was young at the time, and I didn#39;t know that Western media of ten invent #39;news#39; on April Fool#39;s Day,; Liwrote.“我当时还年轻,我根本不知道西方媒体经常会在愚人节这天‘创造#39;新闻,”他写道。The state-run China Daily newspaper on Tuesday identified the Western outlet as the ed Press International news agency. In the club trade, they are called PIs — it stands for “possibly intoxicated”. It’s a nice way of saying someone has drunk too much, and there is a list of things to look out for: falling over, falling asleep, crying or showing other signs of distress. The staff don’t want anyone in the club who is overly drunk but they also don’t want to chuck them out on the street. So they bring them to a quiet area that acts as a holding bay and that’s where I come in. I’m part of a team of Christian volunteers called Club Angels, who work inside nightclubs and bars to assist those who are in a state. Sometimes we just provide a listening ear. A-level results night was mayhem. All I did was take sick buckets from people’s hands, empty them into the loo and give them back again. I’m not fazed by the sick, I’m being useful. And who else would do it if we didn’t? It’s not actually that bad to deal with: normally the clubbers haven’t eaten, they’ve just been drinking cocktails or J#228;gerbombs. (J#228;gerbomb)。We always have baby wipes, alcohol gel, rubber gloves and hairbands to tie people’s hair back. We also carry sugary sweets and tissues. I focus on the Tiger Tiger nightclub in Croydon. People see stories in newspapers of drunk young people in city centres and they think, how debauched — they are drunk for the sake of it. But often it will be because those young people are dealing with problems, the same reason why older adults drink. Meeting someone in a club when they are intoxicated is strange because they open up more than they usually would. Sometimes I sit and listen to someone and I think, I’m not surprised you’ve had a lot to drink. I would have a lot to drink if that happened to me. One girl had just had a job interview and the guy interviewing her had come on to her. He said, “If you come back to mine, you can have the job.” The same girl was a full-time carer for her brother, who was very sick. Another person had had a recent abortion, another’s dad had been diagnosed with cancer. They are dealing with heavy problems so they are out drinking to relieve some of that pressure. By day I’m a Pilates and yoga instructor, and I’ve also done some stand-up comedy. But I first heard about Club Angels at church. A speaker came to talk about it and she said, “This is an initiative we are setting up in London, would anyone like to volunteer?” I thought, that’s something I could do. I could identify with those people who have had too much to drink and need helping out. My church, Central London Vineyard, is not like others. It’s a group that meets at night in a bar in Soho. It’s not a big building with singing, stuff that people are turned off by. It’s just real people like me. People are a bit suspicious of someone doing something for nothing. But Club Angels are not preaching, and we don’t try to convert people. We’ve got printed on our T-shirts, “PS We’re Christians, ask us if you want to know more.” And that’s it. 我们的T恤上印着一行字:“PS We’re Christians, ask us if you want to know more(顺便提一句,我们是基督徒,如果你想了解更多,我们有问必答)”。 At the start of a shift we pray for the night, the staff, for joy and happiness for the clubbers and for everyone to have a great night. We finish at 3am. If there was lots of drama and tears and stories that night, I’m often still buzzing and stay up for a bit when I get home. I’m a night owl, and the work suits people who still have mindful energy late at night. I also go out clubbing and drinking — but I don’t drink when I’m on duty. I’m never tempted because it’s not about me. I need to be on my best form. But it’s important that all of us have drunk alcohol and been in clubs so we can relate. I’m definitely not coming at it from a squeaky-clean perspective. /201503/365312
