Women are paying thousands of dollars more over the course of their lives than men to purchase similar products, according to a study of the gender pricing of goods in New York City conducted by Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). Comparing nearly 800 products from more than 90 brands sold in store and online, DCA found that on average and across five industries, women#39;s products cost 7% more than similar products for men. 7%。The five industries specifically referred to toys and accessories, children#39;s clothing, adult clothing, personal care products and senior/home health care products. In all but five of the 35 product categories analyzed, products for female consumers were priced higher than those for male consumers. Across the sample, the DCA found that women#39;s products cost more 42 percent of the time whereas men#39;s products cost more 18 percent of the time. 42%。Giving some case studies, such as children#39;s cycle helmets, scooters, shampoo and razor cartridges, the DCA showed how similar, or even almost identical products, can cost different amounts for men and women. Over the course of a woman#39;s life, the financial impact of these gender-based pricing disparities ;is significant,; the DCA said in its report. ;Individual consumers do not have control over the textiles or ingredients used in the products marketed to them and must make purchasing choices based only on what is available in the marketplace. As such, choices made by manufacturers and retailers result in a greater financial burden for female consumers than for male consumers.;“个体消费者不可能控制这些商品的制造,她们只能在市场上提供的各种商品之间做出选择。 /201512/419067

Has the season of over-indulgence taken its toll on your tummy? If so, you#39;re far from alone. But prominent tums actually come in different shapes and sizes - and appear for all sorts of reasons. Here#39;s how to work out your tummy type - and how to target it in 2016. What does it look like?外观A pot belly sticks out mainly at the front, while there is less weight gain on your bottom and hips. If you look like you#39;ve got a cauldron strapped to your front, then you have a pot belly. What Causes It?成因Binge-drinking alcohol - as well as eating too many refined carbohydrates - will create this type of tummy. How To Target It甩肚秘诀Monitor the calories you drink as much as the ones you eat. What Does It Look Like?外观Your tummy is prominent and sticks out, bulging like a spare tyre or muffin top. Your skin often feels hard to touch, as if there#39;s an inflated balloon deep inside. What Causes It?成因This tummy starts out flat at the start of the day and usually expands as time goes on—particularly after meals. No matter how big it gets, you won#39;t see any change on the scales. One of the main causes is a build-up of wind. As food gets broken down while it travels through the intestines, the bacteria that feed on it create up to six to eight litres of gas as a by-product. However, if the bugs in your gut have difficulty breaking down certain foods, it will also start to ferment, creating more wind, which starts to push the abdominal wall outwards. Obesity surgeon Professor Basil Ammori, of the Salford Royal Hospital, says constipation and eating too much in one go can also create this effect. How To Target It甩肚秘诀Try sticking to a diet that excludes foods that trigger bloating because they can be harder for the body to digest. For many people, this means avoiding foods that belong to the so-called FODMAP group (it stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols) which includes artificial sweeteners, wheat, garlic and onions, as well as some fruit, such as cherries and plums, and some vegetables, including artichokes, beetroot and mushrooms. What Does It Look Like?外观This tummy sticks out at the front but it is softer and more saggy than a pot belly. It often starts under your bust and forms a soft roll - or a muffin top - which hangs over your waistband. What Causes It?成因Dr Marilyn Glenville, author of Fat Around the Middle says: #39;In stressful situations, the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol helps release sugar into the bloodstream so your body has the energy to escape or defend itself.《肚腩解密》的作者玛丽琳·格伦维尔士称:“人在高压力环境下,会触发#39;战或逃#39;反应,身体会释放一种名为皮质醇的激素,帮助往血液中释放糖分,让身体有足够的能量应对危机。#39;But unless you do something physical, as your body is expecting you to, all that extra energy has nowhere to go. #39;If we are continually stressed,#39; Dr Glenville adds, #39;the fat reserves go to the lower abdomen so they can be close to the liver and be quickly converted back into energy in another emergency.#39;“如果你持续处于压力状态中,那脂肪便会堆积在离肝脏近的下腹。 How To Target It甩肚秘诀Reduce your stress levels with relaxation techniques such as deep-breathing and meditation and get more sleep so that your body no longer feels it has to prepare for attack. Eating little and often helps to stop the roll-coaster fluctuations of hormones, including cortisol, says Dr Glenville. What Does It Look Like?外观Even if you have a slim waist, you have a stubborn roll of fat around your bikini line along with a bigger bottom and saddle-bags on your hips, creating a pear-shaped look. What Causes It?成因The reason for this weight gain is that some women suffer oestrogen dominance which can be genetic but may also be triggered by a range of complaints which unbalance the female sex hormones. Conditions include endometriosis, in which tissue that normally grows inside the uterus grows outside it and pumps out more oestrogen, and fibroids which are benign tumours of muscular tissue which grow inside the womb. Endometriosis affects up to one in ten women of childbearing age while three out of four women age 30 to 50 will develop fibroids at some stage. Women may also be exposed to too much oestrogen because they ingest high levels of the synthetic versions of the hormone in some farmed meats, water or residues from chemicals in plastics and water or from taking the contraceptive pill. Oestrogen is responsible for laying down the feminine curves of a woman when she goes through puberty and creating more rounded buttocks and thighs and other fat stores y for when she has a baby. If the fat cells in these areas, which are very sensitive to female sex hormones, continue to be over-stimulated, the weight will continue to pile on, giving a woman a pear-shape. After menopause, unless a woman is on hormone replacement therapy, she will tend to lose this fat on her hips and thighs leaving her looking more apple, than pear shaped. How To Target It甩肚秘诀Avoid foods high in saturated fats which have been linked to higher levels of oestrogen. Eating lots of tough-to-digest fibre, like seeds, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, can also help as it binds itself to extra oestrogen in your digestive tract and helps to remove it from the body. What Does It Look Like?外观Three months or more after you#39;ve given birth, your tummy still looks as if you#39;ve just had your baby and the area lacks tone, creating a saggy look. What Causes It?成因During pregnancy and birth, the abdominal muscles divide in order to allow your uterus and tummy to expand. After birth, the two sides of your six-pack muscles should naturally knit back together. If this does not happen, however, you are left with an unsightly bulge. This is caused by the fact your abdominal wall is so weak it can no longer hold the contents of your stomach and intestines in as well. Christien Bird, a women#39;s health physiotherapist at the White Hart Clinic, in Barnes, South West London, says half of mothers have this condition, known as Diastasis Recti, straight after birth and while it mostly corrects itself around 30 percent still have it after five to seven weeks, while others have it permanently unless they seek treatment. #39;The main separation is in the linea alba – the connective tissue – that lies down the middle of your body, between your six-pack muscles. If it does not go back the whole abdominal wall can look saggy.#39;“怀后,连接两侧腹肌的腹白线会被拉开。 How To Target It甩肚秘诀If you can feel a gap below your breastplate, into which you can fit the width of three fingers, when you perform a sit-up, see a physiotherapist who can teach you exercises to help knit the muscles back in place. Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the muscles from within may also help as well as yoga poses such as #39;the plank#39;. This involves lying face down, raising your body on your elbows and toes and holding your body in a straight line from your head to your feet for a few minutes at a time and breathing steadily before releasing. What Does It Look Like?外观It#39;s not just your tummy that#39;s fat, although that will be the biggest part of you. Your whole body is big, including your arms and legs, giving you a puffy, marshmallowy look. What Causes It?成因The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck which makes a hormone called thyroxine, which controls how fast you process the calories in food. However about one in 13 women have a condition called hypothyroidism which means they make less of this hormone. Although the causes are not completely understood, it may be caused by the ageing process or because the gland is attacked by the body#39;s own immune system. Endocrinologist Professor Ashley Grossman, of London#39;s St Bartholomew#39;s Hospital says: #39;The thyroid is responsible for your overall metabolism. If you have hypothyroidism, you#39;re not burning up all the calories consumed, so the extra is stored and gets deposited all over the body as fat.#39;伦敦圣巴塞罗缪医院的内分泌学家阿什利·格罗斯曼说:“甲状腺与人体新陈代谢息息相关。 How To Target It甩肚秘诀For many women, the first step is proper diagnosis, because hypothyroidism is often confused with general mid-life weight gain. Treatment may include drugs containing a synthetic version of the hormones to top up levels. Natural approaches include eating foods rich in iodine - which help support the thyroid - like shellfish, seafood and dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach. /201602/426437

Colon cancer patients who were heavy coffee drinkers had a far lower risk of dying or having their cancer return than those who did not drink coffee, with significant benefits starting at two to three cups a day, a new study found. Patients who drank four cups of caffeinated coffee or more a day had half the rate of recurrence or death than noncoffee drinkers. But, the researchers caution, cancer patients should not start ordering extra tall coffees. The study, the first to report such findings, does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship between coffee drinking and a lower risk of colon cancer recurrence. As other experts note, there may be differences between heavy coffee drinkers and abstainers that the research was not able to account for. In recent years, many studies have pointed to coffee#39;s health benefits, suggesting coffee may protect against Type 2 diabetes, reduce overall deaths and perhaps even help protect against dementia. Other studies have suggested coffee may reduce the risks of certain cancers, including colon cancer. The benefits are generally attributed to coffee#39;s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But as with many studies about diet, proving a link between coffee consumption and protection against cancer recurrence is difficult. ;Think about it: People who drink a lot of coffee tend to be high stress, high pressure, intense and compulsive,; said Dr. Alfred Neugut, a professor of cancer research, medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University and a director of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital#39;s Cancer Prevention Center. ;If they have cancer, they#39;re going to be more obsessive about following all the rules and doing all the things they#39;re supposed to do. So it may be that coffee itself is playing a physiological role, but it may also be a surrogate marker for you being a compulsive health-conscious good behaver.;;想想看:大量喝咖啡的人往往压力比较大、容易紧张或有强迫倾向,;美国哥伦比亚大学的癌症研究、医学和流行病学教授,纽约长老会医院癌症防治中心的主任艾尔弗雷德·纽各特士说。 ;Dr. Charles S. Fuchs, the director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, who led the research, acknowledged the limitations of his study and called for interventional studies to replicate and confirm the findings. ;No one has ever done this before in colon cancer patients. It does require confirmation,; he said. Patients should not start drinking coffee based on this study, but, ;If you#39;re a coffee drinker and enjoy your coffee, stick with it,; he said. ;If a patient says, #39;Well I hate coffee,#39; I#39;d say there are other things you can do, like avoid obesity, exercise regularly and follow a balanced diet.;他说:;此前尚无人在结肠癌患者中进行过这样的研究。 ;The study, published Monday in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, followed 953 patients with Stage 3 colon cancer who had been treated with surgery and chemotherapy. /201510/404050

Is it worth it? What is it? Handstands, basically. How much does it cost? Handstands are currently free to perform, although it’s always worth learning good technique. My trainer was aerialist Zoe Jones, who holds workshops in London and works one-to-one for about the price of a personal trainer. Alternatively, just search YouTube for hand-balancing tutorials. What does it promise? Improved core strength, posture, upper-body strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. What’s it actually like? One of the best things I’ve done. Yes, really. I’d never managed an unsupported handstand in my life before, but Zoe started me off gently with stretches and planks to help me learn technique. From there, we progressed to flipping all the way over on to a crashmat. Gradually, by learning which parts of my body I needed to flex, lock and pull in, my stability began to improve. I can’t say I looked gracious at any point – I was a wobbling, purple-faced Jenga tower with a great big exposed belly – but within an hour, I could just about hold myself unsupported. For all of two seconds, admittedly, but that still counts. Going upside down for the first time is a bit hairy, but the whole thing is brilliant. Hand-balancing is an incredible bodyweight workout – my shoulders ached for about 24 hours afterwards – but you barely notice it, because you’re so busy learning a new skill. It’s addictive, too – the next morning, I found myself practising at home, up against a wall. Is it worth it? Yes. I really can’t recommend this enough. /201603/430202

A man wrote a letter to a small hotel he planned to visit on his vacation: ;I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?;一个人给一家他计划在假期里停留的小旅馆写了封信,“我非常希望带着我的,它很干净很有教养,你能允许它和我睡一间屋子吗?”An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who said, ;I#39;ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I#39;ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I#39;ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I#39;ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you#39;re welcome to stay here, too.;旅馆主人立即回了封信,“我经营旅馆很多年了,从没偷过毛巾,床单, 餐具,或者墙上的画。 /201511/409055

Do you ever think that it#39;s kinda crazy that we can order pizza from our cellphones and yet no one can figure out how to stop (or at least slow) the inevitable march towards death? Well, you#39;re not alone. Science has been trying to figure out this whole aging thing for a long time now, and a new development just could be one of those watershed moments in history. According to the New Zealand Herald, a new anti-aging drug is going to be tested on human subjects starting next year. The potential result of this could mean that we, human beings, could extend our life spans to 120 years of age and be in good health to the very end. The drug in question is a widely used diabetes pill called Metformin and costs mere cents to make. Metformin helps to increase oxygen flow on the cellular level, thereby slowing the necessary cell divisions that keep our bodies both functioning correctly but ultimately lead to aging. Belgian researchers have tested the drug on roundworms, and have had positive results so the next step is to do a human trial. ;I have been doing research into aging for 25 years and the idea that we would be talking about a clinical trial in humans for an anti-aging drug would have been thought inconceivable,; says aging expert Professor Gordon Lithgow. ;But there is every reason to believe it#39;s possible. The future is taking the biology that we#39;ve now developed and applying it to humans.;“但我们现在有理由相信这种试验是可行的。 Let#39;s just hope that cosmetic surgery can keep apace of these new developments. /201512/414043
