You are specialA well-know speaker started on his seminar by holding up a $ bill in the room of 0.He asked, who would like this $ bill.Hands started going up.He said,I'm going to give this $ to one of you,but first, let me do this.He proceeded to crumple the $ note up.He then asked, who still wants it? Still the hands were up in the air. Well,he replied, what if I do this? He dropped it on the ground, and started to ground into the floor with his shoe.He picked it up,now, crumpled and dirty. Now,who still wants it?Still the hands went into the air.My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson,no matter what I did to the money, you still want it.Because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $.Many times in our lives,we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make, and circumstances that come away. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what happened,or what will happen, you will never lose your value.Dirty or clean, crumpled or finally creased, you are still priceless to those who love you.The worth of your lives comes not in what we do ,or who we know, but by who we are.You are special.Don't ever get it. 79395

It's good. 很好 Good 跟 cool 很像,都是听到什么好事时就可以脫口而出:"It's good!" I just got an A from that course." 一般别人跟你问好时:"How are you doing?"通常我们会回答:"I am good." 或是"I am doing good." When you say something is nice, it means it's pleasant. When you say something is good, it means it's suitable or fine. 或是 "Good to hear." . That's great. I am great!" 3. That's wonderful. 太棒了 Wonderful 听来就要比 great 还要更好一些,when you say something is wonderful, it means it's really terrific如果说这个拿 "A" 的人不但是个美眉而且还很漂亮的话,就试试这句吧! "That's wonderful!" 曾经在广播上听到一段对话, 主持人问:"How are you today?" 听众答:"I am just good." 于是那人就改口答:"I am great." 那人才说:"I am wonderful." That's incredible. Companionship of Books A man may usually be known by the books he s as well as by the company he keeps; there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comting and consoling us in age.Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain a third. There is an old proverb, ‘Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this” Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; the world of a man’s life is, the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comters.Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human eft. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time have been to sift out the bad products; nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good. Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see the as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe. The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which on still listens.

I work at a company where there are about a gazillion employees. I can’t say that I know them all by name, but I know my fair share of them. I think that almost all of them know me. I’d say that’s the reason I’ve been able to go wherever it is I’ve made it to in this world. It’s all based on one simple principle I believe every single person deserves to be acknowledged, however small or simple the greeting. When I was about years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I was busy trying to bulls-eye the “O” in the stop sign with a rock. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any old time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody and not open up your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” That phrase sounds simple but it’s been a guidepost me and the foundation of who I am.When you write an essay like this, you look in the mirror and see who you are and what makes up your character. I realized mine was cemented that day when I was years old. Even then, I started to see that when I spoke to someone, they spoke back. And that felt good. It’s not just something I believe in; it’s become a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble they may be or even how important. At work, I always used to say hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I was also speaking to the people in the cafe and the people that cleaned the buildings, and asked how their children were doing. I remembered after a few years of passing by the founder, I had the courage to ask him a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could in go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”I’ve become vice president but that hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it lets them come into mine, too. You two go on ahead. 1. Just buy the damn boots. Just buy the damn boots." Mind your own damn business. "Ok. You are damn right. You know her damn well. This one is a heck lot worse. This one is a heck lot worse." What the heck is that? 通常是看到什么令你十分惊讶的东西)" "What the heck are you standing here?" Get the heck out of here."

TRUST Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg,Pa.,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late.I was late and if anyone asked me how fast I was driving,I'd have to plead1) the Fifth Amendment) to avoid self-incrimination3).Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching my fists with impatience. At one point along an open highway,I came to a crossroads with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but as I approached the light,it turned red and I braked to a halt.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting the light to change, the only human being at least a mile in any direction. I started wondering why I refused to run the light).I was not afraid of being arrested, because there was obviously no cop around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it. Much later that night, after I'd met with a group in Lewisburg and had climbed into bed near midnight, the question of why I'd stopped that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it's part of a contract5) we all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it's an arrangement we have, and we trust each other to honor it:we don't go through red lights.Like most of us,I'm more apt to6) be restrained from doing something bad by the social convention that disapproves of it than by any law against it. It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it ?And we do,too.Trust is our first inclination7).We have to make a deliberate8) decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical9).Those attitudes don't come naturally to us. It's a damn good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing we have going us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time.We do what we say we'll do;we show up when we say we'll show up;we deliver when we say we'll deliver;and we pay when we say we'll pay.We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised,it's a deviation) from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that violates) the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself stopping the red light that night. by Andy Rooney 853

There are many areas in which peace needs to be accomplished - within ourselves, between ourselves and others, and between ourselves and the divine. When any part is out of balance, a lasting peace cannot be maintained.Welcome to Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax, I’m Faith. A state of peace does not grow out of a false sense of safety, but out of understanding how to interact with the ces we are subjected to. Rather than reacting automatically, we must learn how to best respond. Automatic, habitual reactions lead us and others into blind alleys. Responding, on the other hand, includes response-ability, the power to see things as they are, stay balanced and make an appropriate response. This is the action of seeking peace. Many may not be aware of the enormous power their choices and actions have upon their lives and the lives of others. It has been said that even a small amount of real love has the power to dissolve mountains of hate. The wonder is why we are so stingy with our good will, why we hold onto thoughts of hatred and revenge. Seeing this is the first step. Letting go comes next. This is Faith at Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax. Rather than pretending to be loving and peaceful, we must learn how to actively work with all that opposes peace. We must learn how to work with our fear and anger when it arises. Even in the midst of anger we can be peaceful, if we learn how to handle it properly. In this way we pursue and practice peace. 9

Three Days to See(Excerpts)假如给我三天光明(节选)All of us have thrillingstories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how thedoomedhero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictlydelimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings? What happiness should we find in reviewing the past, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and akeennessof appreciation which are often lost when time stretches bee us in the constantpanoramaof more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty ofimpendingdeath. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of tune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us, however, take life granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are inbuoyanthealth, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The samelethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize themanifoldblessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and soundshazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.

If somebody tells you, " I'll love you ever," will you believe it? I don't think there's any reason not to. we are y to believe such commitment at the moment, whatever change may happen afterwards. As the belief in an everlasting love, that's another thing. Then you may be asked whether there is such a thing as an everlasting love. I'd answer i believe in it. But an everlasting love is not immutable. You may unswervingly love or be loved by a person. But love will change its composition with the passage of time. It will not remain the same. In the course of your growth and as a result of your increased experience, love will become something different to you. In the beginning you believed a fervent love a person could last indefinitely. By and by, however," fervent" gave way to " prosaic" . Precisely because of this change it became possible love to last. Then what was meant by an everlasting love would eventually end up in a sort of interdependence. We used to insist on the difference between love and liking. The mer seemed much more beautiful than the latter. one day, however, it turns out there's really no need to make such difference. Liking is actually a sort of love. By the same token, the everlasting interdependence is actually an everlasting love. I wish i could believe there was somebody who would love me ever. That's, as we all know, too romantic to be true. Instead, it will more often than not be a case of lasting relationship. 569
