  • Russia to Withdraw Troops From Buffer Zone in Georgia俄国同意将部队全数撤离南奥塞梯 Russia has agreed to withdraw its troops from controversial buffer zones it had set up around Georgia's breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The announcement by the Russian president was made following talks with visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy. After talks with the French president near Moscow, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said all Russian troops will be withdrawn from areas of Georgia adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia to positions held before military action that began August 8. Mr. Medvedev says the agreement is based on a guarantee the Georgia will not use force. Mr. Sarkozy says he presented his Russian counterpart with a letter signed by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili stating he will comply with the demand. President Medvedev said Russian troops will be replaced with international observers. Following his visit to Russia, the French leader went to Tbilisi for talks with Georgian leaders. The Kremlin leader says the withdrawal will take place within 10 days of the deployment of no less than 200 EU observers by October 1, 2008. Mr. Medvedev said Russia has also agreed to pull out its forces within seven days along a line from Georgia's Black Sea port of Poti to the town of Senaki under the condition that Georgia will not use force against Abkhazia. The Russian and French leaders also announced international discussions on the Georgian Conflict would be held in Geneva beginning October 15. But both men expressed continued disagreement on Russia's recognition of Abkhaz and South Ossetian independence. Mr. Sarkozy said it is not up to Russia to unilaterally recognize the two breakaway regions, because there are established international procedures for recognition of new nations. Mr. Medvedev said the decision is irrevocable. The Russian leader also accused other countries, including the ed States of trying to renew Georgia's military potential, though he offered no evidence to back the claim. President Sarkozy was accompanied by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. The EU diplomatic team now presents the cease-fire plan to Georgian President Saakashvili in Tbilisi. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry says the Russian navy is planning joint naval exercises in the Atlantic with Venezuela this year. Ministry Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko made the announcement at a Moscow news conference, saying the two countries will conduct joint maneuvers, search and rescue operations and communications training. He says Russian anti-submarine aircraft will also be temporarily based at a Venezuelan airport. Russian ships participating in the exercises are expected to include a heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser "The Peter the Great" and a large anti-submarine ship, The Admiral Chabanenko." Nesterenko added that the fundamental agreement for the move was reached with top Venezuelan leaders long ago. Nesterenko says the naval activities are not linked to the current situation in the Caucasus, nor aimed in any way at harming the interest of a third party. Russian officials, however, have objected to the presence of NATO ships in the Black Sea and also to U.S. Navy ships docking in Georgian ports. Moscow says the American warships could be used to deliver weapons under the cover of humanitarian assistance. U.S. officials reject such charges, saying since Russia's invasion the ed States has provided nearly million in humanitarian assistance to Georgia, including more than 1,200 tons of food and other relief supplies. 200809/47872。
  • In 1162, deep in the heart of Asia, a child was born. He was clutching a blood clot(血块), a sign from heaven that he was destined to be a great warrior. His life was to become a legend, his name---Genghis Khan. Many believe his story is simple, that he was the incarnation of evil, a brutal barbarian who butchered millions. But the real character of Genghis Khan is far more intriguing. How did this illiterate outcast turn the feuding tribes of Mongolia into a powerful nation and how did he transform the Mongol hordes into a ruthless and disciplined fighting machine, an army with revolutionary tactics and ingenious weapons that ultimately stood poised to conquer Europe. And why on his deathbed, did he believe his divine mission remained unfulfilled? Soon I will know death, but I will never know my destiny.Shortly after his death, his heirs gathered their memories into an epic account of his life. They called it the Secret History of the Mongols(蒙古秘史). Evidence from Chinese and Persian sources, the work of leading scholars and the Secret History allow this to be the most complete television portrait of Genghis Khan ever made. The characters are all real historical figures and the words of Genghis Khan are rooted in the great speeches of the Secret History. This is the story of how that tiny fist turned to iron and came to rule the largest land empire ever known to man.In 1215, the Mongol warrior Genghis Khan led his army to Beijing, capital of Northern China. After fighting his way across Asia, the city stood before him. But Beijing was protected by formidable defenses. Surrounding it was a wall 12 meters high and 30 kilometers long. Behind the wall was one of the world's most advanced armies. First, Genghis Khan besieged the city. Then he ordered an audacious attack. He forced enemy prisoners to fill his front lines. He built new weapons to attack the city's defenses. Finally, having endured the Chinese arrows and bombs, he commanded his Mongol warriors to scale the walls. Genghis Khan sensed victory was within his grasp. Beijing was fighting for its life.A poor nomad from the remote Mongol steppe, Genghis Khan had made an extraordinary journey. The boy, who would become Genghis Khan, was called Temujin(铁木真). He was the son of a tribal warrior chief. When he was only nine years old, he received news that was to change his life.incarnation: the embodiment of a deity or spirit in some earthly formbutcher: kill, slaughterdisciplined: showing a controlled form of behaviourdeathbed: the bed where someone is dying or has diedon his deathbed: while he lay dying, right before he died 200809/49233。
Officials in the Republic of Macedonia say they will repeat voting in 22 precincts that were shut down during Sunday's parliamentary election because of a deadly shootout, reports of intimidation, and alleged fraud. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is claiming victory, saying his conservative party (VMRO-DPMNE) will control more than half of the seats in the 120-seat parliament. Macedonian voters tried to cast ballots in the early parliamentary elections, despite gunfire and election irregularities, which led to the closure of nearly 20 polling stations. Election officials said two separate shootings occurred in the village of Aracinovo, near the capital, Skopje. Villagers reported the troubles began when someone tried to vote on behalf of multiple people for a party of the country's ethnic-Albanian minority. He and another party supporter were injured during a shootout with special police, and one apparently died of his injuries. The shooting raised fears of a new wider ethnic conflict in the area. Aracinovo is in a region where insurgents fought Macedonian government forces in 2001 to win more rights for ethnic Albanians, who comprise about a quarter of Macedonia's two million people. There were also shootings and gunmen reported elsewhere in ethnic-Albanian areas, including near the headquarters of the Democratic Union for Integration party. The election tensions follow a bitter campaign and allegations of assassination attempts against ethnic-Albanian opposition leaders. Despite the troubles, the conservative party (VMRO-DPMNE) of the pro-Western Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is expected to win the ballot. In televised comments, he urged supporters not to be intimidated by violence, and help his country to join the European Union and other Western organizations. Do not be scared about your decision, and do not ignore your responsibility," said Gruevski. "You have the right to ask things for your country. You can be a patriot and be proud to enter the European Union." That opinion is shared by ethnic-Albanian opposition rival Ali Ahmedi, who says he recently survived an assassination attempt. He told France 24 Television through an interpreter that he has urged supporters to vote, despite apparent threats. This physical threats against the party, which were repeated, are meant to terrorize them not to vote," said Ahmedi. "The more people vote, the larger the distance will be between the two parties." Prime Minister Gruevski called the early parliamentary elections after failing to secure NATO membership for his country, which was blocked by Greece. It says Macedonia should first change its name, because it resembles one of Greece's provinces. If re-elected, Prime Minister Gruevski's government is likely to include a partner from the ethnic-Albanian parties. The European Union has warned Macedonia that political and ethnic stability in the country is crucial for its European future. 200806/41037。
