American Way of Hospitality美式待客之道An American friend has invited you to visit his family. Youve never been to an American home bee, and youre not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When youre the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That what hospitality is all about making people feel at home when theyre not一位美国朋友邀请你去他家你以前从未去过美国人的家,你不确定该怎么做该带一个礼物吗? American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any way. When invited a meal, you might ask, ;Can I bring anything?; Unless it a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, ;No, just yourself.; most inmal dinners, you should wear comtable, casual clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inm your hosts of the delay. During the dinner conversation, it customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food! When youve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since youre the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it probably time to head the door. You dont want to wear out your welcome. And above all, dont go snoooping around the house. It more polite to wait the host to offer you a guided tour. But except housewarmings, guests often dont get past the living room. Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay a few days. Here a good rule of thumb house guests Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, ;The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest.; Even relatives dont usually stay several weeks at a time. While youre slaying wilh an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back! Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people. Folks in the southern ed States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, ;southern hospitality; has be-come legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms. So dont be surprised to find the welcome mat out you. Just dont get to wipe your feet.

Maggie: Hi, guys.Kids: Hi.Carol: Where's dad?Maggie: Oh, we split up--- the afternoon.Kids: Ohh.Maggie: He dropped me off and went a haircut.Ben: Ahhh....Jason: Hi, honey. Maggie: Hi, oh I thought you were getting a haircut.Jason: I did.Maggie: It doesn't look like it.Jason: of course it doesn't. That's why they charge so much. Where are the kids?Maggie: Oh well they are all sitting side-by-side on the couch. Jason, it's eerie. They aren't yelling, they aren't fighting, they aren't even watching TV.Jason: This is a bad thing? 85

Nivia: Why are you walking funny? Michael: Oh, I pulled a muscle in my right leg while playing with my kids last weekend. It’s hard to walk without feeling a twinge of pain. Nivia: I’m sorry to hear that. Why are you sitting in that awkward position? Michael: I strained my back while exercising. Initially, I felt a sharp pain and I thought it was something serious, but it doesn’t hurt much now. There’s just a dull pain when I sit up straight. That’s why I’m sitting like this, leaning to the side. Nivia: That’s too bad. Why are you holding your arms that way? Michael: I got up in the middle of the night last night to go to the bathroom and bumped into the door. I got a huge bruise on my arm. It feels better if I hold it over my head. Nivia: Why are you shaking your fingers that way? Michael: I helped my daughter finish her science project school. I – I mean we – glued over 0 wooden sticks together. My fingers are really sore and stiff, and they won’t stop throbbing. Nivia: I’m afraid to ask you any more questions. I don’t think any man could survive any more injuries than what you aly have! 75

The happiest people dont necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along. Happiness exists those who cry, those who are hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future will always be based on a gotten past; you cant get on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, youre the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying. Please send this message to those who mean something to you, to those who make you smile when you really need it, to those who have touched your life in some way or another, to those who make you see the bright side of things when you are really down. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to make you human, enough hope to make you happy.
